1887-1896 September 16, 1887 launched The Colchester Advocate. E. F. Bigelow was the founding Editor and Publisher. It was a major effort to bring Colchester residents international, national, state and local news. It's interesting that this paper marketed itself as the people's paper. It's first editorial section stated, "We propose to be perfectly independent-to be controlled by no party, denomination, clique nor faction..."
