Bacon Academy can boast of many great men and women that have passed through it's doors. The following people are examples and not meant to exclude any of the others. As time permits, more and more people will be noted. These stories focus upon the national and state importance of these individuals. It must be noted that all of these greats also had a great influence upon the Town of Colchester as well.
John R. Watrous, on the first Board of Trustees, in 1801, was granted the 1st charter for the Masonic Knights Templars in the Americas. A full and rich detail of his history can be found on the pages from the 1953 Alumni Beacon pp. 17-20. Stephen Austin, class of 1808, co-founded the state of Texas. Lyman Trumbull, good friend of Abraham Lincoln, wrote the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery in the United States. Morrison Waite was the Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court 1874-1888. William J. Johnston, class of 1937, was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his valor in WWII. Click here for a more detailed account from The Baconian 1953 yearbook.
