With the permission of the Colchester Board of Selectmen, ColchesterTalks is proud to publish digital copies of past printed materials. This section is devoted to materials from Colchester Hayward Volunteer Fire Department 125th Anniversary 1854-1979.
"The original Fire Company was operated under town and borough review from 1854 until 1884, when a separate fire department was organized." (1) In 1884, the Borough of Colchester decided to pass a By-Law assuming government authority. The text of the original By-Law is available through a citizen's private collection of Borough records. In 1991, with the consolidation of the Borough, the "Hayward Fire Company" fell entirely under the Town of Colchester's review. Here's a few interesting pages from their 125th Anniversary commemorative. The equipment used over the years. In true Yankee spirit, Colchester used hand pump water spouts from 1854 until 1924! Did you know that Hayward's first fire station was used until the mid 1980's, over 130 years! Here's an article from The Standard discussing voter's approving the new station.
