In it's prime, Hayward Rubber generated over $35 million (2005 dollars) in annual sales.  It also hastily sold it's prime patent to Goodyear Rubber Company in 1838.

Why would a company relocate to Colchester in 1847?  At that time, Colchester was a poor site for a factory, for the town was crippled by poor transportation, lack of water and no other industry. (1)

The answer to this was love.  Louisa Burr convinced her husband, Nathaniel Hayward, to buy land from her father in Colchester.  Public record shows that Henry Burr sold Nathaniel the land for $870 in 1847.   Her father gave Nathaniel an offer he couldn't refuse.
