Continually in the Colchester’s Service for over Forty Years

 By: JDM III

While doing my research for various stories, I wondered which person(s) actively on a Board or Commission has served Colchester the longest number of consecutive years.  After some research and asking around, it looks like this Town is very fortunate to have John Mazzarella.  In total, John has attended over 750 meetings and spent over 1,500 hours in service to our Town.

John has served Colchester for over 40 consecutive years.  He started in the mid 1960’s as an official of of the Borough of Colchester.  He started as the  Borough of Colchester Assessor.  Until the Borough’s consolidation in 1991, John also served as Borough Treasurer, Borough Clerk and Borough Burgess.  Also, he served on the Jack Jackter renovations committee in the 1970’s.  After the Borough was consolidated in 1991, John served several years on Colchester Water and Sewer Commission.  In 1994, John started serving on the Board of Education.  He is now Vice-Chairman.

John moved here in 1962.  His original Borough address was only RFD #14.  His wife had twins on the way and they needed space to stretch out.  He’s raised 5 children in Colchester and sent them all to college.  He fondly recalled his children taking recess on the Town Green.

Since John has lived in Colchester, he’s seen many things.  I asked him to name his three most important events, since his arrival.  They are:

  •  Sewers coming to the Borough in the mid 1960’s.  In those days, his family, like many others had to deal with their septic system always backing up.

  •  The growth of school Building in Town.  When he came to Town, his children had to wait until second grade to see the inside of a school building.  Originally, they had school in Town rented space from the Federated Church or Jewish Aid Society.

  •  The consolidation of the Borough of Colchester with the Town of Colchester.  He feels that it helped facilitate formal Town Planning.

At the end of the interview, I asked John if he's ready to end his long service to Colchester.  There was a playful tone in his voice when he said not in the foreseeable future.  He still has much to offer.
