 Friend Hovey,

Sir I wish to enquire whether the claims in your hands against me in favor of the Brownings belongs to the Brownings or whether Trumbull has settled it and it belongs to him.  My object for enquiring is to get it assigned.  If it belongs to Browning, I shall go down and see them.  Please inform me and inform me what day I could probably find your honor at home.

What's a boxwood marking gauge?

According the Nicholas Norton,

"It was used by woodworkers and carpenters to make marks for a saw or other cutting device to follow.

They were made some time between 1830 and 1850.

S. S. (Samuel Smith) Norton was C. H. Norton's grandfather (my great-great) and lived and worked in the Hope Valley section of Hebron. We assume the tool is marked Colchester because that was the point where it was shipped.

Samuel died in 1869 and is buried in the Ponemah Cemetery here in North Westchester."
