At the turn of the 20th Century, Postcards were the main source to record the visual history of Colchester. The Colchester Historical Society has the largest collection in Town. This is a photo prior to the great fire of June 9 1890. Comparing to the following photo of Merchant Row, you'll note most of the structures on the left side of the photo burned down. The following collection is from Farm Security Administration - Office of War Information Photograph Collection. This was an effort to record America in the Depression era 1935-1945. Photographs in this collection were taken by photographers working for the U.S. Government.
