Colchester has a long and glorious past.  There once was a time when the ancient burial grounds were overrun through neglect.  There once was a time when old houses fell under the bull dozer for progress.

For example, click here to read a story published in 1970 about the passing of the Charles Brown House.

Fortunately, Colchester's citizen's and government separately and together worked to save our past.

  1. In 1963, the Colchester Historical Society was formed.

  2. The Town of Colchester has also been very active.  The Town created the position of a Town Historian.  Also, in the 1990's the Town took progressive and bold steps to help preserve Colchester History.

  3. Since 1803, the Bacon Academy Board of Trustees has actively preserved our past.

  4. In 2003, the Colchester Land Trust was formed to help preserve open space and scenic natural beauty.
